Parting thought before going home for the day...
With the Foo Fighters latest release still in the Billboard Top 50 and a long, long streak of good music consistently being put out by this band, I ask this question.
Has Dave Grohl's contribution to music surpassed Kurt Cobains?
Just a thought.

Back to your subtle hints that maybe Nirvana wasn't quite all that?
I agree. I've said it many times: Nirvana is the most over-rated band ever.
Having said that, I pose this question to your question of "has Dave Grohl contributed more to music than Kurt Cobain": He's put out more music, but has any of it been as influential as Nirvana? I would say that 95% of music critics would probably answer no to your question. I would say....yes and no. He's physically put out more music, but none of it has been as influential.
Or look at it this way, without Nirvana, there would be no Dave Grohl.
But again, Nirvana is the most over-rated band of all time. That's not to say they aren't good or I don't like them. It's just that they happened to get all the credit that was far more deserved by bands like Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins.

I'm not even saying I agree with the idea, I'm just thinking at this point the thought needs to be discussed. I would say that probably 99.5% of music critics would think it's an asinine thought. I don't think it is.
My thought is this. Let's assume that Nirvana had one or even two albums left in them if Kurt hadn't shot himself. After that, most people would assume there would be a breakup and the members would go do their seperate things. I don't think anyone would anticipate that the drummer would go on and musically be the more successful of the three. I think that's exactly what would've happened. Kurt and Courtney would have continued to be "enablers" for each other and Kurts musical legacy would have diminished over time. Lackluster albums would have followed and people would look differently on his talent. By commiting suicide, he locked himself into some sort of "legend" category. He never allowed the chance to "fade away" like so many others from that era.
While I agree that Kurt Cobain had a musical impact, I say longevity has quite an impact on music as well. How many kids will pick up a guitar and be influenced by Dave Grohl? It may not be as immediate as it was in the 90's by Nirvana, but over time it could be the same.
Another thought is this. Dave Grohl had more than just a little bit to do with Nirvana's success. It would be interesting to hear what the band would sound like without him. He was their "Bonham" if you will. He filled their sound out and gave it a lot of the heaviness. I just think that Cobain got all the credit for everything in that band. Heck, he hated the "slick" sound of "Nevermind". He absolutely hated the production. If left to Kurts wishes, "Nevermind" might not have been the same record.
